The Lebowski Cycle is a series of paintings and drawings exploring the idea of layered narrative, using masterpieces of European art and the Coen Brothers 1998 film The Big Lebowski as a starting point.
The Oath of the Horatii (After David) • oil on linen 72" x 40"
The series came out of a longstanding interest in narrative painting - complex figurative paintings that depict dramatic story arcs, and compress many thoughts, ideas and emotions into a single image.
The Death of Marat (after David) Oil on linen, 96 x 58 inches
Looking for a way to mitigate the grand seriousness that historical and religious paintings often contain, I combined the characters, humor and the film’s story arc with themes and titles from well-known narrative paintings, in order to explore complex narratives with multiple points of view, moods, and intentions.
